2006, May - Letter from NBHA/SCBHA President John C. Everett
The South Carolina National Birdhunters Association Inc. has finished the 2005-2006 field trial season with a very good year. Thanks to the GUN Dog Handlers, we had an increase in dogs run this past year. We also had an increase in our regular field trial dogs this year. We ran a total of 504 dogs. These number should be tops for the entire NBHA.
I attended both Amateur and Open National Championships this year. There were certainly some nice dogs there. SC handlers and dogs did okay in the stakes they competed in. Dennis Beauford handled his Dad’s P/M Sam’s’ Carolina Pride to second place in the National Amateur Derby. Yours truly handled Shadow Shadow’s Pete at the National Amateur Chapionship. Pete made the callback and finished the hour call back, but didn’t do well enough to place. Honky Tonk Tomcat, P/M, owned by Moehill Kennels and handled to a 3rd place finish in the National Open Derby. He also placed 1st in the NBHA National Free for all Derby. Jenny and I would like to thank Scott Miller for doing a good job with Tom. Other dogs from SC did place outside the state of SC. As most of you know, we are really catching lots of flack from The AMERICAN FIELD about our handicap rule. I just received a letter from Mr. Bernie Matthys and he gives us three options: 1. Return to the original concept of NBHA (Approved by the Field Dog Stud Book) as walking stakes organization. 2. Continue in the current vein as a quasi-walking horseback organization and forfeit all Championship events. 3. Suspend all NBHA Competition for the coming season 2006-2007 and use this time to determine what type of an organization the NBHA chooses to be. As you can see, we don’t have any choice of what we have to do. Talked with Bobby Taylor and we are still getting some of the polling in on the handicap rule. We are still looking at the polling to see what the NBHA membership wants. We will decide what is best for the organization and move on with whatever the decision is. South Carolina Bird Hunters Association Inc. will hold its Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet on June 17, 2006, at the Compass Restaurant at I-95 and 378. The meeting will start at 3:30 P.M. and the banquet at 7:00 P.M. As usual, we need to have items for auctions and raffle to offset the cost of the events. I certainly hope many of you can attend our meeting and banquet. Whether you won an award or not, come out and support you NBHA friends. The points for dog and handler of the year are in this letter and I certainly hope they are correct. If you have questions about the meeting, banquet, or points, please call me. John C. Everett |
